Figured I should include at least one pic of former star pupil Amleth but this is mainly for Camus, who looks damn good in that suit. Loved this bizarre scene where Waver gets some deets from Adashino, who has clearly insisted she can only give them to him if they’re in the London Eye and not facing each other. Exactly what else has he misrepresented to us? There’s some interesting opportunities to explore there. One could argue it’s not necessarily canon, but I do genuinely like this extra lore that lends even more credence to the prospect of Waver being something of an unreliable narrator. To tell the truth, to begin with I wasn’t really sure about this new character Camus suddenly having such a focus despite never existing before this, but I liked her a lot more on the second and third viewings (I did end up watching this that many times, partly to digest the story better and partly so I could have a viewing without pausing for screenshots all the time.) I really like how she changes the perception of Waver being a failure whom no one liked – she even calls him her hero. Now he clearly has a friend group of both Melvin and new character Winner – who also stands up for him when he was being bullied. We’d always been led to believe that he was a loser with no friends – and then, after Case Files, no friends except Melvin. Waver having at least one admirer is a really interesting new piece of lore, retconned in or not. As is usual in Case Files, this doesn’t necessarily bother me because once again the focus is less on the who and how, but the why – and the ‘why’ turns out to be that Waver’s former classmate Camus was in love with him. It’s a nice blend of Type Moon magical mumbojumbo and Waver playing detective – although his solving of the mystery does rely on him realizing things and receiving details at very convenient times beforehand, that are concealed from the viewer. Instead, the rather interesting magecraft of ‘shell projection’ has recreated the Clock Tower from a decade ago, with Waver and his classmates trapped inside. I’d always wanted to see more canon material about Waver’s student days prior to /Zero, but always expected if it ever happened it would be via flashbacks.

It also certainly helped that unlike the first special, it was given almost 50 minutes to achieve this, making it seem more like a mini movie. However I think the much bigger surprise here is not so much the plot itself but the fact that it manages to make more than just a silly bodyswap gag – but what was honestly one of the best and most heartfelt episodes of the franchise. This too is an original story (although I believe the novel writer Makoto Sanda was involved?), and you’d be forgiven for assuming that was the synopsis of a fanfic or a doujinshi.

The anime series had its pros and cons – and to be honest most of the cons were for its anime original episodes. It’s been a good while since any animated Case Files content, and by golly does absence make the heart grow fonder. Scenes like this are some of my favourite types of scenes in Case Files, with the beautiful lighting on the old architecture. If they keep making more anime he’s gonna end up looking like a character from a Riyoko Ikeda manga. They just keep giving Waver more eyelashes. The class lines up for the Waver petting zoo. However, when Touko Aozaki arrives, things take a sudden turn…’ For a character they retconned into Waver’s past who probably wont be seen again, Camus has such a good design. On the day of the reunion, he makes his way to the gathering of his contemporaries, planning to confront whoever transformed his body and hoping to reveal their intentions.

He is suddenly a full decade younger! Lord El-Melloi II has become Waver Velvet, his former self! Believing himself to be in the grip of a powerful, magically induced delusion, Lord El-Melloi II immediately begins investigating how this could have happened.

One morning, as the reunion’s date draws near, Lord El-Melloi II takes a look in the mirror and reels in shock. ‘ A letter is delivered to Lord El-Melloi II informing him of a Clock Tower reunion. We’d been led to believe Waver was really short for his age but according to this class photo, either he’s older than most of the students here or all mages were shorter in the 90s. Since I’ve reviewed all the other Case Files episodes along with Junko, it’s only fitting I should review this one too. Unlike the pilot episode that kicked off the series last time, this one is a bonus episode that was apparently in the works for a while but got massively delayed due to Covid. Anyway, for the second time now the Type Moon New Years anime project has gone to Lord el Melloi II.
